How to Choose Drawer Slides for Your Cabinet Project

Key takeaways
- A published load rating assumes a flat, rigid cabinet and both slides mounted - conditions a real cabinet rarely reproduces
- Always ask whether the rating is per pair or per slide, and whether it is static or dynamic
- Ball-bearing three-fold slides are the right default for most cabinet projects; heavy-duty hardware on a 15 kg drawer is wasted money
- Vertical misalignment above roughly 2 mm makes balls skid instead of roll, and the wear happens where you cannot see it
- Side-mounted slides need about 12.7 mm clearance per side - specify drawer box width from that, not from the cabinet opening
Most buyers choose a drawer slide by its load rating. The 45 kg slide beats the 35 kg slide on the spec sheet, the order goes out, and eight months later the 45 kg slide is the one coming back. The rating was never the problem. The installation was.
We build cabinet hardware in Foshan, and we see this pattern often enough that it is worth writing down. Here are the six decisions that actually determine whether a slide lasts – roughly in the order they go wrong.
The load rating is a lab number, not a promise
A published load rating is measured under conditions your cabinet does not reproduce: both slides mounted, load evenly distributed, screws into a solid substrate, a flat and rigid cabinet side panel, and a test rig that does not flex. Change any one of those and the real capacity drops – sometimes by half.
Two questions close most of the gap before you compare prices:
- Per pair, or per slide? Some catalogues quote the pair, others quote a single slide. A “45 kg” figure that means one slide is a 90 kg pair; a “45 kg pair” is half that.
- Static or dynamic? A static rating describes a drawer sitting still. A dynamic rating describes a drawer being opened and closed with that load, thousands of times. They are not the same number and rarely appear together.
If a supplier cannot answer both in one email, the number on the datasheet is decoration.
Four slide types, and where each one belongs
| Type | Typical load | Extension | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roller slide | 10-25 kg | Partial to full | Light drawers, price-led furniture, low cycle counts |
| Ball-bearing three-fold | 20-45 kg | Full | The default for most cabinet projects |
| Undermount (concealed) | 25-45 kg | Full | Kitchen and furniture where the slide must not be seen |
| Heavy-duty / over-travel | 45-125 kg+ | Full or beyond | Tool cabinets, industrial drawers, wide drawers |
The practical point: ball-bearing three-fold is the right answer for the majority of projects, and the most common mistake is paying for heavy-duty hardware on a drawer that will never hold more than 15 kg. The second most common mistake is the reverse – using a 25 kg slide on a 600 mm wide drawer full of tools, where the drawer itself twists under load and the slide takes the bending.
What actually kills a slide: mounting tolerance
Slides are a parallel mechanism. Two rails, one on each side, must sit at the same height, at the same depth, and parallel to each other. Nothing in a slide’s design compensates for a cabinet that is not square. In practice:
- Vertical misalignment above roughly 2 mm starts to bind. The drawer runs, but the balls or rollers skid instead of roll, and the slide wears from the inside where you cannot see it.
- Side panel thickness versus screw length. A 12 mm screw in a 16 mm particle board panel leaves 4 mm of margin. Add a second fixing point during a repair and you are through the panel. Through-holes are the single most common cause of a slide pulling out of a cabinet.
- Particle board does not hold a thread. Self-tapping screws loosen after two or three removals. If a cabinet will be serviced, specify machine screws into a metal insert, or plan for the fixing holes to move.
The reliable sequence is: assemble and square the cabinet first, fit the drawer box and check it runs freely in the opening, then position the slides against the drawer, and only then fix them to the cabinet. Positioning slides on a cabinet that is still being squared is how a good slide gets a bad reputation.
Extension and the clearance nobody budgets for
Full extension means the drawer front clears the cabinet face and the whole drawer box is accessible. Three-quarter extension means the back of the drawer stays inside the cabinet – fine for deep storage, useless for a drawer where someone needs to reach the back.
Side-mounted slides take roughly 12.7 mm of clearance per side, so about 25.4 mm total. Drawer box width is the cabinet internal width minus that figure. Undermount slides take their clearance from the bottom instead, and the groove position is fixed by the slide manufacturer’s template – it cannot be adjusted later without a new drawer bottom.
This is where drawings save money. A drawer specified as “internal width minus 25 mm” across 4,000 units is 4,000 drawers that either rattle or bind, depending on which way the tolerance falls.
Material and finish: when stainless is worth the premium
Cold-rolled steel with zinc plating or electrophoretic coating is the standard, and for indoor furniture it is the correct choice. Stainless becomes worth its cost in three situations: high humidity, frequent cleaning with aggressive detergents, and coastal air.
As a rule of thumb, a stainless slide costs noticeably more than a zinc-plated one – often in the range of a third to double, depending on grade and finish – and the premium is only justified when the environment would otherwise shorten the slide’s life. For a bathroom cabinet on a coast, that is money well spent. For an office desk in a dry building, it is money spent on a feature nobody will notice.
Also worth knowing: on stainless, look at the grade, not the word. 304 covers most indoor and food-contact work. Chloride-heavy environments – coastal air, swimming pools, salt on roads – are where 316 earns its extra cost. A supplier who quotes “stainless” without a grade is quoting a colour, not a material.
How to put it on a drawing
If you are sourcing slides as part of a cabinet or a hardware set, these eight lines remove almost all ambiguity:
- Load per drawer, in kg, as used – not as hoped
- Extension required: partial, three-quarter or full
- Mounting: side-mount or undermount
- Available side clearance, or drawer box width and cabinet internal width
- Material and finish, with grade if stainless
- Closing action: self-close, soft-close, or push-to-open
- Test standard or cycle count, if your market requires one
- Packaging: individual bag, pair per box, labels and carton marks
The eighth line is the one buyers forget, and it is the one that decides whether a container arrives in sellable condition.
Where we fit in
We make drawer slides in cold-rolled steel, including soft-close slides for furniture and heavy-duty slides for wider and heavier drawers, alongside the rest of our cabinet hardware range. Tooling, stamping and surface finishing run in our own workshops – eleven of them – which is why we can quote a stock item from one piece and a custom slide from your drawing.
If you are still deciding between slide types, send us the drawer dimensions and the load. We will tell you which type we would use, and if the answer is “not ours”, we will say so.
